The Langport Leveller
The Langport Leveller - a new newspaper for Langport
The first edition of the Langport Leveller was distributed on 15th October 2010. First and foremost we make no apology for the fact that this does not look exactly like a local newspaper! There are three things about The Langport Leveller that make it different:
We have chosen to use clean white paper, A4 size the sort that most people use in their daily lives. So instead of yellowing paper and newsprint that comes off in your hand we have a modern finish and we always use a minimum of 12 point font - so you can read what we have to say without using a magnifying glass.
We are a content-led paper. You will not find press releases printed verbatim with minimal editorial input. Yes, we use local stories, but it's not all church fetes and cheese fairs. We like to include national issues as well, showing how they will (or won't) impact on the local community, we do not agree that this should be the sole preserve of the national newspapers. Where we do use press releases as content, it is always with editing and editorial input.
Finally we are independent. Unlike the Fosse Way News and Western Gazette we are not run by the Daily Mail, nor are run or influenced by the Church or the Town Council. The paper is owned, managed and run independently. We report on Langport from Langport. We do not have an agenda and we do not seek to create one. Undoubtedly from time to time we will make mistakes or misjudge a story, but it will be our error, not one dictated by a press agenda from an office in London, Surrey or Bristol.
That is why we're different and why we feel we can make a difference. The paper is delivered free to homes in Langport and Huish Episcopi every month. We hope you read it, enjoy it and join in the debate about the issues that matter in our area.
